Place names
The indigenous Quillasingas gave it the name of Urcunina or Urqunina, which means "mountain of fire." The name "Galeras" was given by the Spanish conquerors who arrived in the region at the beginning of the 16th century. This name was designated because the silhouette of the top seemed similar to the galleys of ships propelled by the force of the oars.
Until the end of the nineteenth century, the volcano was indistinctly called the "Pasto volcano" or "Las Galeras volcano." 3 With the beginning of the twentieth century, and therefore the creation of the department of Nariño in 1904 and the designation of Pasto as its capital, it officially took the name "Galeras".
